Solar Sail Launch Failed Due to Rocket Malfunction - Russian Investigators

A Russian investigation into why the Solar Sail satellite launch went wrong has issued its findings, ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
"The reason for the failure of the Volna rocket, which was to place the Russian-US Kosmos-1 satellite into orbit, has been investigated by a commission led by the Naval Chief of Staff. Its conclusion is clear: the failure was caused by the malfunction of a turbopump within the rocket's power plant," a deputy head of the Russian Space Agency, Viktor Remishevskiy, was quoted as saying.
The launch took place on 21 June from a submarine in the Barents Sea. The Kosmos-1, developed by the US Planetary Society, was designed to discover if space vehicles could harness solar power, the agency recalled.
