Some Affy Tapple caramel apples recalled

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of certain Affy Tapple-brand caramel apples due to a labeling error.

The FDA said Affy Tapple LLC of Niles, Ill., is voluntarily recalling its Limited Edition ““ Classic Candy Flavors two-pack caramel apples because the label did not include the allergen statement manufactured on shared equipment with peanuts and tree nuts. Consumers who have an allergy to peanuts might suffer a serious allergic reaction if they consume a product containing such ingredients, the FDA said.

The recall applies only to packages with a Best By date on or before 10/15/09. The product, sold in a clear plastic package with a dark brown label, was distributed in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio and Kentucky.

Company officials said consumers who are not allergic to peanuts or tree nuts face no safety risk.
