Scorecard Ranks Top Climate Change Initiatives

A study issued Thursday during UN climate talks in Barcelona shows that Germany, Mexico and the US are at the top of the list of countries to create more energy-efficient policies.
The report shows the results of a study of the European Union and six EU countries as well as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and the United States.
The international green scorecard was initiated by environment groups WWF International and E3G.
The groups ranked two initiatives by Germany as the top two in the world. One project sought to increase energy efficiency in buildings with better construction standards. The project earned a rating of 17.2 out of 20.
The second initiative involved a "feed-in tariff" by which suppliers of renewable energy enjoy guaranteed price levels for 20 years, AFP reported, which earned 15 points.
Behind Germany was Mexico, which launched an urban bus system in Mexico City in 2005 to phase out old, less-efficient buses. The project earned 14.2 points.
“This report shows that governments which implement green and climate friendly solutions will win and take a leadership position in the world,“ Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF’s Global Climate Initiative said.
“Governments which don’t invest in low carbon solutions will lose in the end and their voters will turn away from them,” he said. “We call on the G20 to come up with a strategy to drive investment in the green economy. Not investing in low carbon solutions nowadays is simply short-sighted.”
Additionally, the report estimates the cost for industrialized governments to provide financing to the tune of $160 billion “for adaptation and mitigation in developing countries, especially to those most vulnerable to climate change.”
