15% Of Air Traffic To Be Powered By Alternative Fuels By 2020

European plane manufacturer Airbus on Tuesday announced its vision for 15 percent of all air traffic to be powered by alternative fuels by 2020.
By 2030, alternative fuels could account for up to 30 percent of power for global air traffic, the company said during the Dubai Airshow.
"If we get the right sources, it is possible that 15 percent of the world's jet fuel will come from sustainable sources by 2020, and 30 percent will come from sustainable sources by 2030," said Ross Walker, engineering program manager for alternative fuels at Airbus.
Walker added that the challenge would be to find sustainable feedstocks that would not require land and water used for food production.
He referred to algae as an option, which can be grown in salt water.
"We believe this is the golden chalice we’ve been looking for," said Walker.
"If an area the size of the United Arab Emirates were planted with algae, it could produce enough bio jet fuel to support the world’s civil aviation industry," he said.
He added that the company had plans to launch a test flight of an A320 running on 50-50 BTL-kerosene mixture next year.
