Prague, 19 July: Environment Minister Libor Ambrozek (Christian Democrats, KDU-CSL) today rejected the amendment to the environment protection bill which a group of senior ruling Social Democrat (CSSD), senior opposition Civic Democrat (ODS) and junior opposition Communist (KSCM) deputies submitted. The amendment excludes the public from construction proceedings in order to avoid obstructions by interest groups.
Ambrozek said that the amendment would be a step backwards as civic associations would lose the possibility to comment on projects threatening the environment.
The amendment, which the government is to discuss on Wednesday, is criticized also by the Friends of the Earth environmental organization.
Its authors say that they want to make investors sure that their investment will not be foiled because of irrelevant issues misused by narrow interest groups or individuals against public interest.
But according to the Friends of the Earth, the right to present one's views about constructions of chemical plants or dump heaps should be taken for granted in a democratic society.
