Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR) announced today that it has received an order for four SPI-SUN SIMULATOR(TM) 350i photovoltaic module testers from First Solar, LLC of Perrysburg, Ohio. The systems being provided to First Solar will be used to pre-test photovoltaic laminates and perform final module tests under simulated Air Mass 1.5 Global terrestrial conditions. Unique features of the SPI-SUN SIMULATOR 350i, including its upward-facing illumination and low height, make it ideal for incorporation into First Solar's advanced automated module assembly line. Shipment of the SPI-SUN SIMULATOR 350i module testers is expected to begin in mid September 2005.
Roger G. Little, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Spire Corporation, said, "We are pleased that First Solar has returned to Spire for equipment after their exhaustive comparative analysis. First Solar began using Spire's simulator for their CdTe solar module testing last year, and will use the newly procured simulators in their expansion lines. Spire Solar continues to incorporate the latest technical developments to control and monitor process and machine performance. Satisfied users testify to the high quality, durability and cost effectiveness of our equipment."
"We have been very satisfied with the performance of our existing Spire simulator, and felt it was the ideal solution for our additional production lines as we expand our manufacturing capacity," said Alan Henderson, First Solar's Director of Engineering. "Spire's SPI-SUN SIMULATOR 350i has proven to provide the best quality, performance and value of all the simulator equipment in our evaluation," concluded Alan Henderson.
First Solar manufactures solar modules with an advanced thin film semiconductor process that significantly lowers solar electricity costs. First Solar photovoltaic modules are optimized for grid-connected applications and are sold to leading solar project developers for use in commercial solar projects.
