The Endangered Species Act is perhaps the most powerful and most significant environmental legislation ever passed in the United States. Since 1973, it has been a safety net working to prevent the extinction of some of our most beloved species including the bald eagle, California condor, and the gray whale.
In 2003, on the 30th anniversary of the Act, Congressman John Dingell declared, "This monumental legislation has, quite literally, saved our natural heritage while allowing the US economy to grow at record rates."
Although there have been many attempts to weaken the law, the Endangered Species Act has remained one of the nation's strongest commitments to protecting the natural world.
