Southside Plaza in Richmond, Va., To Regain Grocery Store Next Month

Jul. 22--A swath of South Richmond that's been without a supermarket for more than a year will soon get a new place to shop for groceries.
Farmer's Foods plans to open a store next month at Southside Plaza, at Belt Boulevard and Hull Street, City Council Vice President Jacqueline M. "Jackie" Jackson said yesterday. A Community Pride grocery formerly occupied the site.
While Southside Plaza is the first urban store for the Chase City-based group, the company also is looking at five other sites in the city, Jackson said.
The Southside Plaza store is expected to employ 80 people, with almost all those hired to come from the neighborhood. Renovation of the 29,000-square-foot store, a $1.2 million project, has started.
"We are very excited about our entry into the Richmond area," said Farmer's Foods Chief Operating Officer Ron George. "We attribute the success of our Farmer's stores to the special connection each store makes with the community it serves, and we look forward to becoming an active partner in the South Richmond community."
Jackson, who represents the area on City Council, said a replacement for the Community Pride store has been long awaited. That local chain's financial woes forced it to close the store's doors in the spring of 2004.
"I am delighted that not only do we now have a new grocery store ideally located for the convenience of our residents, but also new local opportunities for greater economic growth in the community," Jackson said.
Farmer's Foods operates seven locations in Virginia and three in North Carolina. The Mecklenburg County company is owned by its employees.
