Water pollution is the highest-ranked environmental concern among residents of the European Union (EU), according to a recent survey of citizens in all 25 EU member states. It was cited as the principal environmental concern of 47% of those surveyed, followed by "man-made disasters such as oil spills and industrial accidents (46%), climate change and air pollution (both at 45%), and chemicals (35%)," according to an April 29 European Commission press statement.
Most respondents (88%) said policy-makers should take environmental concerns into account when developing economic, employment, and other policies, the statement says.
The commission's Public Opinion Analysis division conducted the survey in October and November using a sample that included about 1000 citizens from each of the 25 EU member countries, the statement says. A summary of the survey and a detailed report of the findings are posted on the Web at europa.eu.int/comm/environment/barometer/ index.htm.
