AROUND NORTHERN NEW MEXICO

A recent increase in moisture and drop in temperatures has led U.S. Forest Service officials to lift Stage II fire restrictions from the Carson National Forest, although the Tres Piedras, El Rito and Canjilon ranger districts will remain under Stage I restrictions.

Most of the forest had been under Stage II restrictions since July 11.

Stage I restrictions prohibit building, maintaining or using a fire, campfire, charcoal broiler, or coal or wood stove without a permit, except within a developed recreation site where grills and stoves are provided. Pressurized gas stoves are allowed. Smoking is allowed only within an enclosed building or vehicle, a developed recreation site or an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is free of all flammable material. Fireworks are prohibited on national forest lands.
