Big Energy Project Set to Go After Cash Boost

A MAJOR farm energy project in Southland is close to launch after the confirmation of funding from two groups this week.
Dairy Insight and the Sustainable Farming Fund have put $135,000 each towards the Venture Southland project.
Venture Southland enterprise project manager Robin McNeill, who heads the project, said he was waiting for one other organisation to confirm $90,000 of funding before an official launch would be held.
However, he indicated the launch was only weeks away.
The two-year project will research farm energy use, energy efficiency and energy generation technologies on dairy farms.
Mr McNeill said research would also examine improving milk quality, water consumption and effluent disposal.
About 10 Southland dairy farmers would be involved in the project with Canterbury University's Centre for advanced engineering, Mr McNeill said.
Farm energy use had been investigated by other organisations, but none had undertaken such a comprehensive project in Southland.
Linking together a project that investigated water, milk quality, energy efficiency and technology made it a compelling study for farmers, he said.
Lumsden dairy farmer Wayne Duncan has assisted Mr McNeill with organising the project and will continue to work in collaboration with Venture Southland throughout the project's development.
Once the project was launched, each dairy farmer in the project would post individual research results on web pages, Mr McNeill said.
Dairy Insight farm productivity investment manager Phil Urlich said part of the reason for the company investing in the project was to do with the quality presentation from Venture Southland.
"The proposal was also in line with Dairy Insight's objectives to increase farm productivity." The unusual and exciting aspect of the project was the way research results would be posted on the internet, Mr Urlich said.
"It is using the latest level of technology so farmers can monitor the results online in `real time' as results are generated."
