Baker Appoints Merkel As Director of Natural and Cultural Resources

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Helene K. Merkel has been named Director, Natural and Cultural Resources, supporting the Environmental practice, and will be located in the Glen Burnie, Maryland, office of Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation .

In this position, Merkel will be responsible for developing Baker's natural and cultural resources staff and capabilities and expanding business opportunities throughout Baker in both the public and private sectors. Merkel brings over 20 years of diverse experience in natural resources management, environmental and urban planning, hazardous waste management, and policy analysis. Her professional experience includes program management for several U.S. Army Environmental Center programs, assisting the U.S. Army in managing their Chesapeake Bay Program, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Program, and their Regional Environmental Offices in Denver, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia; and Edgewood, Maryland.
Merkel received her Bachelor's Degree in Urban Studies, Environmental Planning, from the University of Maryland, and holds a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (M.U.R.P.), from George Washington University. Her professional affiliations include leadership roles with the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) and the Western Shore Conservancy. She was a member of Virginia's Low Impact Development Task Force, the Rural Tier Focus Group for the update of the Bowie and Vicinity Master Plan, and the Environmental Focus Group for the development of Prince Georges County's Green Infrastructure Plan.
