Chinese company signs deal on hydropower project in Myanmar
YANGON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's Gezhouba Water and Power ( Group) Co. Ltd. signed a contract with the Department of Hydroelectric Power of Myanmar under the Ministry of Electric Power here Monday for the implementation of a dam project of the Yeywa Hydropower Project, the largest in Myanmar.
Under the contract worth of 46.3 million US dollars, the Chinese company is to undertake the construction of a reinforced concrete dam with the supply of machinery equipment.
The signing was witnessed by Myanmar Minister of Electric Power Major-General Tin Htut, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Li Jinjun and President of the Chinese company Yang Jixue.
The contract is the fourth for the Yeywa hydropower project.
The China National Electric Equipment Corporation signed with Myanmar a 2.2-million- dollar contract in March 2004 for the building of a dam gate. While the second and the third ones which worth 125 million dollars in total were inked last month by a Chinese joint venture consortium, grouped by China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) Technology Co. Ltd. and Sinohydro Corporation Ltd.
Under the second and third contracts, the Chinese side will supply hydraulic steel structure and electro-mechanical equipment including turbine generators and transformers.
The 790-megawatt four-generator hydropower project, being built on the Myitnge River, 50 km southeast of Mandalay, will generate 3. 55 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year on completion. The electricity generated will be transmitted to the whole country through Kyaukse, Meikhtila and Mandalay on 230 kilo-volt double cable lines.
