Posted on: Wednesday, 3 August 2005, 06:00 CDT

Leading food and drink companies from across the North-East are to sell their wares at Europe's biggest trade fair in October this year.

A delegation led by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) will travel to the ANUGA festival in Cologne, Germany, which showcases food and drink from around the world.

North-East companies taking part in the visit will include Northumberland Cheese Company from Seaton Burn, Northumberland; Tanfield Food from Stanley in County Durham; Polar Krush frozen drinks from Ashington; Henry Hirst Provisions from Benton, Newcastle; Challenger Foods from Sunderland; Heatherslaw Bakery from Cornhill-on-Tweed in Northumberland; Blendex, of Hetton-le-Hole; and Axis Bottling from Eaglescliffe, Stockton.

Jeff Bean, regional specialist international trade adviser for UKTI, who will lead the mission, said: "ANUGA is the world's most important food & drink trade fair, combining 10 specialised trade fairs under one roof. Areas covered are fine food, gourmet, chilled food, meat, frozen food, dairy, bread and bakery, drinks, catering and retail.

"More than 6,000 suppliers and 165,000 visitors from 157 countries are expected to take part in ANUGA 2005.

"The event is a real trendsetter and source of inspiration and momentum for the food businesses of tomorrow.

"ANUGA is without doubt the world's biggest shop window in terms of food and drink ( if it's happening in food and drink, it's happening at ANUGA.

"Here in the North-East we have a growing number of companies that are already winning overseas contracts within this sector and this event provides an ideal opportunity for them to build new contacts and explore new market opportunities."

Travelling as part of a group, delegates will benefit from the support and assistance available from Mr Bean and UK Trade & Investment. Overseas commercial officers will also be available to offer advice on a one-to-one basis.
