Green Drinks NYC will hold it’s 2010 holiday party on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at M1-5 Lounge (M1-5.com) in New York City from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cost is $25 in advance and $40 at the door with a cash bar. M1-5 is located at 52 Walker Street, between Broadway and Church Street in New York City.
The holiday party is Green Drinks NYC’s largest event. The 2010 event will feature a talk by British environmentalist David de Rothschild, a Silent Auction with eco-holiday gifts to benefit both Sculpt the Future Foundation and The Algalita Marine Research Foundation, non-profit “take action” stations, a sampling of fair trade chocolates from nine different companies in The Chocolate Room, oceanic slide show projections and music by DJ Ebenezer Bond and Cassette Nova.
David de Rothschild is an adventurer, environmentalist, and the founder of myoo.com, a group that primarily uses adventure, exploration and storytelling as a way to give nature a voice. David is recognized as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer, Clean up the World Ambassador, United Nations Environmental Program Climate Hero and a Young Global Leader respectively. Most recently, The Plastiki was nominated as one of TIME Magazine’s inventions of 2010, and David has been nominated as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year 2010.
Earlier this summer, David and a five-person crew sailed the new and unique 60-foot
catamaran Plastiki – made buoyant from 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles – from San Francisco, Calif., to Sydney, Australia, on a mission to beat waste by drawing attention to the health of our oceans, in particular the colossal amounts of plastic debris.
“If we want to save our ability to live on this planet as we know it we need to tackle our “relaxtivism” through the articulation and realisation of real hands on adventures and activism. Green Drinks has always been the breeding ground for real action through its ability to bring together the dreamers and the curious; all of whom have already taken the first step by just showing up! I am excited to share my own personal questions, dreams, adventures and stories in order to hopefully inspire what’s already a powerful group of concerned citizens.” David de Rothschild.
David will be introduced by Fabien Cousteau, aquatic filmmaker and oceanographic explorer and grandson of the noted oceanographic explorer Jacques Cousteau.
The silent auction will feature a variety of eco-friendly experiences and products including an IWC Pilots Watch Mark XVI, Flying Trapeze Classes, Scuba Certification, Sailing lessons, Recycled sailcloth totes by Ella Vickers, Nau clothing, Bikini Boot Camp yoga retreat, Eco-friendly Mac Package With the Apple Mac mini and more.
Participants are invited to make a pledge to reduce their plastic use by signing up on the “My Plastiki” website available at the venue.
Several ocean-related non-profits will have a booth at the event to raise awareness and answer questions about local ways to get involved in ocean stewardship and include Oceana, Surfrider Foundation NYC, Riverkeeper, Shark Savers and Fabien Cousteau’s non-profit, Plant-A-Fish Foundation, which educates people and empowers local communities to restore the ocean world.
The party will be enriched by fair trade, local, and organic chocolate samples set up in a dedicated Chocolate Room. Participants include Theo Chocolate, Travel Chocolates, SweetRiot, Newman’s Own Organic Chocolates, Kopali Organics, Kallari Chocolates, Divine Chocolate and Antidote Chocolate.
Green Drinks NYC was founded in 2002 by environmentalist and host Margaret Lydecker, and is a popular environmental networking organization dedicated to unifying the sustainable community in New York. With over 14,000 members, it is the largest of almost 800 chapters worldwide. It has monthly events attended by hundreds of persons from a wide range of environmentally-related backgrounds.
The goal of this year’s event is to engage, inspire, and enlighten the NYC Green Community and beyond about the complex issue of plastics in the ocean and suggest daily actions one can take for positive change.
