Regional cooperation on environmental protection promoted in Asia
MANILA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A practitioner network to promote regional cooperation on environmental protection would be established in Asian as 13 countries in the region vowed to effectively implement and enforce the environmental law, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Wednesday.
A two-day workshop of the Asian Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Network (AECEN) hosted by ADB drew down the curtain on Wednesday when environmental agency officials from the 13 countries dedicated to promote environmental law compliance and enforcement in Asia through counterpart exchange and information sharing.
The ADB said in a statement that the delegates committed to working to improve the technical, institutional, and financial capacity of environmental agencies and organizations to strengthen and promote compliance with environmental legal requirements.
"Environmental enforcement has become a top priority of Asian countries," said Supat Wangwongwatana, Deputy Director General for Thailand's Pollution Control Department and AECEN's Executive Committee Chair."
"AECEN provides an important resource to enable environmental officials, judges and other decision makers to share experience in addressing common environmental challenges and in promoting public involvement in environmental compliance and enforcement," he added.
According to the ADB, over the last two decades most Asian governments have developed legal and institutional frameworks to tackle environmental pressures from urbanization and industrialization, but many countries have faced challenges in enforcing laws and regulations.
