JACKSON, Mich., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Heavy air conditioner use drove customer demand for electricity to record high levels Tuesday and Wednesday on Consumers Energy's system, the utility announced today.
According to preliminary data, the total load on the utility's system hit an all-time record peak of 8,510 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday. That broke the day-old record of 8,376 megawatts set between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Before the back-to-back records, the previous all-time high was 8,347 megawatts set on Aug. 7, 2001.

* Record June peak of 8,327 megawatts on June 27 * Record July peak of 8,191 megawatts on July 25
Consumers Energy serves about 1.8 million electric customers. A megawatt is a million watts or 1,000 kilowatts. That's enough electricity to power about 10,000 100-watt light bulbs.
Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides natural gas and electricity to more than six million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
