Washington State Gas Prices Nearly As High As April's Record-Setter

Posted on: Thursday, 4 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Aug. 4--Gas prices in Tacoma crept closer to a record, with the average price for unleaded regular hitting $2.426 Wednesday, AAA Washington reported.

Tacoma's average reached $2.433 on April 28.

Bremerton and the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett metro area both hit record highs Wednesday. Bremerton's average price was $2.395; the Seattle area reached $2.517, AAA said.

Washington has the fourth-highest average price in the country at $2.494, AAA said.

Unless a major disruption occurs in refinery production, regular gas prices in the Puget Sound area should stay at around $2.50 to $2.55 per gallon until the end of September, said Tim Hamilton, executive director of Automotive United Trades Organization, which represents independent gas station owners statewide.

Price changes appear to have been influenced as much by speculation about crude oil price futures as by consumer demand, said AAA Washington spokeswoman Janet Ray.
