Four New Hospitals Begin Certification for SynCardia’s Total Artificial Heart

Two Turkish Hospitals and Two U.S. Centers to Complete Phase I in January

On Jan. 20, SynCardia Systems, Inc. announced that four new hospitals, two in Turkey and two in the U.S., have begun certification to implant the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart as a bridge to transplant. The four centers have, or will complete the first of four phases of certification during the month of January.

  •     Kartal Kosuyolu Yuksek Ihtisas Hastanesi (Istanbul)

Kosuyolu is the second largest hospital in Istanbul and performed 24 heart transplants in 2010. The hospital performs approximately 1,800 cardiac surgeries annually. Kosuyolu completed the first phase of certification in Paris on Jan. 14.

  •     Dr. Siyami Ersek Gogus Kalp Damar Egitim ve Arastirma Hastanesi (Istanbul)

Siyami Ersek is the largest cardiac center in Turkey and performs approximately 3,000 cardiac surgeries annually. There are currently more than 500 people in Turkey in NYHA Class III & IV heart failure who are listed for transplant. The average waiting time for a donor heart in Turkey is approximately 6 months. Siyami Ersek completed the first phase of certification in Paris on Jan. 17.

  •     Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (Houston, TX)

For 20 consecutive years, the Texas Heart Institute (THI) has been ranked among the top 10 Best Hospitals in Heart and Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Established in 1982, the transplant program at THI is one of the most experienced, successful programs in the world. Its surgeons have performed more than 1,150 transplant procedures. THI is scheduled to complete Phase I in Tucson, Ariz. on Jan. 24.

  •     St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta (Atlanta, GA)

Saint Joseph’s Heart Transplant Program is one of only three adult heart transplant programs in the Southeast. The hospital has performed more than 400 heart transplants, and its outcomes consistently exceed the national average. St. Joseph’s is scheduled to complete Phase I in Tucson, Ariz. on Jan. 24.

Currently, there are 36 SynCardia Certified Centers around the world including 15 in the U.S. There are an additional 10 U.S. hospitals and 18 international centers currently undergoing certification. SynCardia Certified Centers are located in Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Russia, Austria, Turkey, Sweden, Canada and the U.S.
