Aug. 05--PASCAGOULA - Chevron did its best to sell safety and responsibility to the 50 to 75 people attending its second open house for a planned liquefied natural gas terminal.
The LNG terminal is being proposed for a 200-acre site at the Chevron refinery in Pascagoula. The open house Thursday night at the Jackson County Civic Center was designed to answer questions from the public.
The half-dozen exhibits lining the walls highlighted areas such as global natural gas markets, proposed facility construction, and safety, environmental and regulatory concerns.
Steve Renfroe, spokesman for Chevron, pointed out the economic benefits and the environmental safety of the proposed depot.
Chevron subsidiary Bayou Casotte Energy has not yet applied for permits for construction of natural gas storage tanks, processing equipment and a ship docking area.
Chevron is hoping the permit process will begin later this year. The terminal would not go on line until 2010.
Notice will be given after the company begins the permitting process. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will schedule a public hearing.
Becky Gillette, a Sierra Club member, said she is concerned about safety and would rather see LNG terminals placed offshore.
