Dr Ivar Giaever, Nobel Laureate and CTO of Applied BioPhysics, will conduct a talk at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Biology of Cancer Meeting on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. His talk with focus on, ECIS, the use of label free impedance sensing for cell research.

In Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS) cells are cultured, using standard tissue culture protocols, upon small gold electrodes whose impedance is measured using a weak AC signal. When cells attach and spread on these electrodes, their insulating membranes constrain the current, forcing it to flow beneath and between the cells. This results in impedance changes that can be readily measured and used to quantify cell behavior.

Data from the biosensor will be presented showing its ability to measure the response of cells to different adsorbed ECM proteins and the extravasation of endothelial cell monolayer by metastatic cells. A novel feature to be described is the instrument’s ability to apply invasive electric fields to either (1) introduce membrane impermeable compounds and then monitor the cellular response or (2) to electrically kill cells to accomplish an automatic wound-healing assay for cell migration measurements.
