Former Krause Plow Corp. Exec Norman Krause Dies at 88

Posted on: Thursday, 11 August 2005, 00:00 CDT

Aug. 11--Hutchinson businessman Norman L. Krause, who for many years led the farm implement manufacturing company started by his father, has died at 88.

Krause tripped and fell Monday while playing badminton in the gym at First Presbyterian Church, and he died later at Hutchinson Hospital.

"He was doing what he loved," said his badminton partner and friend, J.R. Haverty. "We had just had a wonderful visit reminiscing of all the fun we had over the years playing the game. He told me he was the oldest player and I came next. He was a first-class guy."

Krause was president of Krause Plow Corp. for 35 years and its chairman for 20 years. The company, founded by his father, Henry, has made a variety of tillage equipment and grain drills in Hutchinson for more than seven decades.

In his youth, Krause was a member of the Hutchinson Community College debate team that won a national championship and he wanted to become a speech instructor after graduating from the University of Iowa in 1940.

But after his brother Adin was killed in a plane crash, he took on a leadership role with the family company. He was a U.S. Navy officer during World War II and served 4 1/2 years before being discharged in 1946.

Krause's son Steven, now chairman of the company, said that growing up during the Depression made his father very conservative, but he was generous not only with his family and employees but with the community.

He worked in various capacities to bring about the combination of two local hospitals into the Hutchinson Hospital Corp., formed in 1970.

"He shepherded it through, making it a success," said Gene Schmidt, the hospital president. "Many, many hospitals across the country envy the successful way we accomplished this in Hutchinson, putting together two hospitals into a successful operation. His expertise helped get the hospital on firm financial standing from the outset."
