Netherlands causes more air pollution than others, says report
BRUSSELS, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The amount of polluting particulate matter that the Netherlands emits to neighboring countries is three times higher than the volume reaching the Dutch land from those countries.
According to a report titled "A closer look at particulate matter" released on local media, almost half of all the particulate matter in the Netherlands is produced by human activity, for instance traffic.
Dutch State Secretary for the Environment Pieter van Geel said that the problem must be addressed at European level. He also said that a great deal of research is necessary to figure out how the problem can be solved.
Experts say this particulate matter is harmful to human health and thousands of people die prematurely each year as a result of this pollution.
Particulate matter consists of a range of substances that end up in the air from a variety of sources.
