Taiwan: Far Eastern Textile Expanding Investments in China

Posted on: Sunday, 14 August 2005, 03:01 CDT

Far Eastern Textile Ltd. has disclosed a new investment strategy in which all future projects for adding new capacities and increasing current capacities are to concentrate on China.

According to the company, US$100 million will be invested in 2006 and 2007 for building a 110,000-ton/year plant for industrial applications in Suzhou. In order to increase its polyester polymerization capacity this year, US$15 million is being spent to enlarge the capacity of its plant in Taiwan from 800,000 to 900,000 ton/year, and the plant in China from 400,000 to 750,000 tons. When this project is completed, its polymerization capacities in Taiwan and China together will increase to 1,650,000 tons, and rival Yizheng Chemical Fibre, which has the largest polymerization capacity in China.

In addition, the company is expanding its business in nonapparel applications, such as synthetic yarn for industrial applications, packaging materials and beer PET bottles. A company official says, "In Europe, more than 30% of PET bottles are used for beer, but there is no such use in Taiwan or China. Since it is estimated that China consumes more than 30 million tons of beer each year, the potential demand is incredibly great."
