COMMSA Contracts 3 Remote Power Generation Systems for Platforms in Gulf of Mexico

WAITSFIELD, Vt., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northern Power Systems, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp , has been awarded a $2.05 million contract by Construcciones Mecanicas Monclova S.A. de C.V. (COMMSA) to design, fabricate, integrate and install independent remote power systems for three offshore natural gas drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
The projects are part of COMMSA's work on behalf of PEMEX, the state-owned petroleum company of Mexico. PEMEX is engaged in expansion and upgrades of its Cantarell and Sihil offshore oil and gas fields. Northern Power's MT-Power(TM) systems will provide reliable remote power for SIHIL-A, AKAL-Q and AKAL-W, three unmanned platforms being built by COMMSA.
The platforms require reliable power for the critical communications and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems that must be functional at all times: radios, video, process controls, fire and gas, and emergency shutdown. The power systems will also support water pumps, filters and air conditioners.
Power System Architecture Designed for Reliability
MT-Power(TM) is the latest addition to Northern Power's field-proven TelePower(TM) family of power system architectures. Fully integrated and pre-tested, the architecture uses a fossil fuel-based microturbine in a continuous-run mode as its primary source of power generation, with multiple microturbines included for redundancy and capacity. The systems are therefore ideal for applications like platforms, which require maximization of electric power reliability in a Class 1, Division 2 (C1D2) hazardous environment, and a minimum of maintenance and operating down time.
Integrated Packaging to Provide Ease of Installation
The multiple microturbines will be packaged, along with C1D2 gas conditioning equipment and remote controls, onto an integrated steel skid, allowing COMMSA to install the entire power generation system as a unit, creating a minimum of interference with other platform fabrication activities. The power generation package is also designed for associated integration with all power conditioning, distribution and environmental management equipment on the platforms.
Quality Service Leads to Repeat Business
The COMMSA contract is one of several power generation systems that Northern Power has provided to critical PEMEX-owned offshore oil and gas sites in the last several years.
Paul Williams, Latin American Sales Manager for Northern's Industrial Infrastructure Group, stated, "Our extensive experience delivering reliable power systems to PEMEX and other remote sites was a key factor in attaining this contract with COMMSA. Northern has the tools to design and implement the optimal system for these and many other remote power applications."
Ing. J. Aurelio Martinez Martinez, Technical Manager for COMMSA, noted that finding the right power solution was extremely important for the three platforms. "When we looked at the criticality of the loads, hazardous location, and difficulty and cost of maintenance at the sites, we determined Northern Power's system to be the best solution for generating reliable power on these platforms," Mr. Martinez said.
