MPs Call for Food Origin Protection

UK MPs and the Country Land & Business Association are putting pressure on the government to protect the names of regionally and locally produced foods.
Under EU legislation, firms can register food and drink as having a protected designation of origin (PDO) or protected geographical indication (PGI) status.
Alan Duncan MP, whose constituency includes Melton Mowbray, home of the pork pie, has tabled a motion urging the government to raise awareness of the laws.
The UK food industry has been slow to enforce these measures, which experts say have huge marketing implications. So far, the UK has won registered status for just 29 distinctive foods, including Newcastle Brown Ale and Jersey Royal Potatoes.
In contrast, Italy, France, Portugal and Spain have registered 475 between them.
