Taiwan share prices close down 1.70 percent -- Aug. 15
HONG KONG, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan shares plunged 1.70 percent with thinner traded volume on Monday, according to reports reaching here from Taipei.
Share prices on the Taiwan Stock Exchange opened low and closed lower Monday, with the weighted index, the market's key barometer, moving down 105.77 points to close at 6,245.13.
The bourse opened at the day's high of 6,344.88 and hit a low of 6,238.02 during trading. A total of 3.01 billion shares changed hands on a market turnover of 76.45 billion new Taiwan dollars (2. 39 billion US dollars), down from last Friday's market turnover of 91.03 billion new Taiwan dollars (2.85 billion US dollars).
All eight major stock categories lost ground, with textile stocks falling the most at 2.6 percent, followed by machinery and electronics shares at 2.2 percent, foodstuff issues at 1.7 percent, construction issues at 1.3 percent, banking and financial shares at 1.2 percent, plastics and chemicals shares at 0.8 percent, cement stocks at 0.7 percent, and paper and pulp issues at 0.6 percent.
Losers outnumbered gainers 755 to 146, with 102 stocks remaining unchanged.
