Cudahy Plant to Add 140 Jobs in Sioux City, Iowa

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 August 2005, 21:00 CDT

Aug. 17--Expansion of precooked bacon production will add 140 jobs in Sioux Center, Iowa, at the Patrick Cudahy Inc. Golden Crisp plant.

Smithfield Foods Inc., parent company of Patrick Cudahy, announced the $13.5 million expansion at the plant in northwest Iowa on Tuesday.

Golden Crisp will add three new microwave processing lines, doubling the facility's capacity to make precooked bacon.

"This much-needed expansion of our Sioux Center plant will allow us to increase production of our microwave bacon line to keep up with the growing customer demand for our product," said Bill Otis, president and chief operating officer for Patrick Cudahy.

Precooked bacon is one of the fastest-growing products in the meat industry.

Tyson Foods Inc. expanded precooked bacon production at its plant in Omaha last month, while Shelby County Cookers opened a new facility earlier this year in Harlan, Iowa, dedicated exclusively to producing cooked bacon for retail and restaurant sales.

The Golden Crisp plant in Sioux Center already employs 210 people.
