Molecular Insight Expands Executive Research and Development Team

Posted on: Thursday, 18 August 2005, 09:00 CDT

Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the appointment of John A. Barrett, Ph.D., as Vice President of Research, and the promotion of James F. Kronauge, Ph.D., to Vice President of Process Chemistry. Dr. Barrett brings over 20 years of research and development experience in cardiology, imaging and oncology from previous positions with Johnson & Johnson, DuPont Merck, EPIX Pharmaceuticals and, most recently, Infinity Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Kronauge, a key member of Molecular Insight's research team since 1999, most recently as Director of Pre-clinical Development, has over 25 years experience in the development of cardiovascular imaging products. Drs. Barrett and Kronauge will report to John Babich, Ph.D., President and Chief Scientific Officer of Molecular Insight.

"John and Jim are outstanding scientists whose knowledge and industry experience will provide immediate value to our research team as we expand and scale up our clinical pipeline," said Dr. Babich. "John's appointment and Jim's expanded responsibilities reflect our commitment to enhancing our research and development capabilities so that we can continue to advance molecular medicine candidates in the areas of cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurology from our Ultratrace(TM) and SAAC(TM) technology platforms," he added.

Molecular Insight's development pipeline includes BMIPP (iodofiltic acid I123), a molecular imaging pharmaceutical for the detection of cardiac ischemia, and Ultratrace(TM) MIBG (MIP-120T) for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors. BMIPP recently completed Phase 2b development for use in triaging emergency room patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome. Ultratrace(TM) MIBG is in late preclinical development for the visualization and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors. The company has additional compounds in preclinical development.

Dr. Barrett's career encompasses more than 20 years of work in the discovery and development of agents in oncology and angiogenesis-directed tumor imaging and therapy. He is the inventor or co-inventor on eight issued cardiology and imaging patents. He joined Molecular Insight from Infinity Pharmaceuticals, where he was Senior Director Pharmacology/Toxicology, ADME and Bioanalytical. Prior to Infinity, Dr. Barrett served at EPIX Pharmaceuticals as Senior Director of Pharmacology/Toxicology. Previously, he held research and research management positions of increasing responsibility at a number of pharmaceutical companies, including DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals, where he was most recently Director, Discovery Biology Research Imaging; Johnson & Johnson's RWJ Research Institute; and Rorer Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Barrett received his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from St. John's University.

Dr. Kronauge has been an active researcher in the field of radiology and nuclear medicine for the past 20 years and has published more than 50 research articles in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. He is inventor or co-inventor of six issued patents, including one for the use of Cardiolite(R), the world's leading perfusion imaging agent for the detection of cardiac ischemia. He was closely involved with the discovery and development of CardioGen(R) (Bracco) and Mebrofennin(R) (Bracco). Prior to joining Molecular Insight, Dr. Kronauge was Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Director of the Radiopharmacy in the Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Mass. Dr. Kronauge received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from M.I.T.
