Diary: Hit or Miss… Internet Animal Trading Alert
August 20, 2005
The International Fund for Animal Welfare’s revelation that endangered animals are for sale over the net achieved acres of coverage. Led by press officer Rosa Hill, the story centred on research showing more than 9,000 endangered species and animal parts were found for sale online within a week. ‘Is pounds 28,000 too high for a giraffe on the net?’ lampooned The Times. Oxford University’s William Dutton pointed out: ‘The net can be used to support wildlife trading but others can use it to challenge it.’
