Four Winn-Dixie Stores to Close This Week in Broward County, Fla.

Posted on: Tuesday, 23 August 2005, 18:00 CDT

Aug. 23--The shelves are almost bare and it's closing time this week at four Broward County Winn-Dixie Stores.

Two stores in Coral Springs, one in Pembroke Pines and another in Coconut Creek will close to consumers by the end of the week, as Winn-Dixie moves ahead with plans to shutter unprofitable stores and reorganize under bankruptcy court protection.

The four Broward County stores are part of the 326 locations that Winn-Dixie announced in June that it intends to sell or close. There are no stores closing in Miami-Dade County.

About 300 Winn-Dixie employees in Broward County are expected to be affected by the store closings, including 92 at the Pembroke Pines store, according to notices filed with state officials.

Most of the employees are expected to be offered jobs at other Winn-Dixie stores in the area, said Kathy Lussier, company spokeswoman.

But anyone who does not receive a job offer will be given job placement assistance and a severance package based on their years of service to the company, she said.

"We have a great team of associates and we would love to keep as many as we can," Lussier said. "The chances are very good that people who want to stay with Winn-Dixie will be able to find positions."

The four Broward County stores are part of 224 stores that Winn-Dixie is still marketing to potential buyers. Winn-Dixie expects the bids to be presented prior to a court hearing on Friday in Jacksonville.

Winn-Dixie already announced last month that it had offers totaling $45.6 million from other supermarket chains to buy 102 of the 326 stores targeted for closing. These operators intend to continue selling groceries and beverages.
