Using Coconut Waste As Fuel Source Under Study

August 25, 2005

Aug. 25–Authorities in Prachuap Khiri Khan are studying plans to build a power plant fueled by waste from coconut trees.

A small plant could be built that would power local factories or the output could be sold to energy authorities, district agricultural chief Noppadol Pungpong said.

Fuel for the the plant would come from 300-500 tonnes of coconut fibre, husks and underdeveloped nuts produced by local farmers daily, he said.

He said advisers from the European Union were working on the study which should be concluded in six months.

“The idea is an initiative to help farmers sell other parts of the coconut tree rather than just the coconuts themselves,” he said, adding that coconut prices were currently just four baht each, compared with as much as 19 baht in previous years.AFP
