Shell Petroleum pays for gas leak damage in Metro Manila

MANILA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Shell Petroleum Corporation has paid 121 Philippine families for damages caused on Sunday by a gasoline explosion in Quezon City, Metro Manila, local newspaper reported on Firday.

The multinational company handed out checks amounting to 5.4 million pesos (96,000 US dollars) to affected residents, according to local officials.

A check of 1.244 million pesos (22,000 US dollars) went to a resident whose private firm was damaged.

The explosion was caused by a leaking Shell gasoline tanker that had accidentally released thousands of liters of gasoline into a canal leading to a creek in the victimized area.
