Traders Face Waste Disposal Crackdown Bid to Stop Dumping at Recycling Plants

Posted on: Monday, 29 August 2005, 15:00 CDT

ROGUE traders who dump commercial waste at refuse tips and recycling plants are being targeted in a new crackdown.

North Lanarkshire Council has introduced a system to ensure the centres are only available to householders disposing of domestic rubbish.

All van drivers now need to give 48 hours notice before taking waste totheir local tip and notification must be received by 4.45pm on Thursday for entry over the weekend.

Van drivers must also provide details of where the waste is coming from, what type of material will be deposited and the day they will be arriving at the facility.

Staff at the centres will then be able to identify those likely to be depositing trade or commercial waste and can take action.

Kenneth Wilson, head of land services, said: "In the past, it has sometimes been difficult to identify trader vehicles coming into our centres and our new system of working will tighten this up.

"Traders who misuse these facilities are breaching the licence conditions of the facility and also limiting the service available to those looking to dispose of domestic waste."

Notices have been posted at all the refuse tips and recycling centres to advise users of the changes and leaflets have been distributed in communities.

The council provides a trade refuse collection service, which is available to all companies.
