Aug. 26--Her strokes will have to be quick and deliberate. There will be no room for mistakes. All eyes will be fixed on her, and she'll have to get it right the first time.
Port Isabel-based artist Virginia Eggert will create a painting of sea turtles live this Friday at the fourth annual Conservation Awards banquet sponsored by Sea Turtles, Incorporated. The event will be held at Louie's Backyard on South Padre Island and proceeds will benefit the building expansion of Sea Turtles, Inc.
"It's really hard to get a painting finished in a couple hours," she said. "It's one of those things that, to the non-artist it seems like a wonderful thing, but to the artist it seem like pushing the envelope."
Eggert, who paints everything from boats to birds, primarily paint with acrylic in the style of watercolor; this is the style she will use Friday to create her sea turtle painting.
"We're very pleased and honored that she (Eggert) is donating her talents to such a noble cause," said Shane Wilson, president of Sea Turtles, Inc. "People like to buy a piece of art they can see being painted," Wilson said.
The Valley organization is dedicated to conserving sea turtles all over the world, said Wilson, and does not limit its efforts to the Valley. Locally, the group runs a rehabilitation center for injured sea turtles and maintains an education facility. The group has contributed to turtle conservation efforts in Costa Rica, the Middle East and Mexico.
Eggert said she's not letting the stress of creating a live work of art get to her.
"I don't have too much trouble painting. … I'm going to have to get all organized to finish," she said, "I started drawing and painting when I was a little kid â€" it was just what I was good at."
