Bandersnatch Research Issues 'Observations' Newsletter About the European Natural Gas Supply

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 15:00 CDT

BOZEMAN, Mont., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Bandersnatch Research discusses the future source of natural gas to Europe in 'Observations', its free weekly newsletter that helps connect the dots for investors and researchers interested in the energy industry. The following excerpt from the August 24, 2005, edition of 'Observations' leads off the discussion.

The expansion of the European Union into former Soviet states was intended to lessen the influence of Russia in Eastern Europe. However, as growing demand for natural gas in the EU is increasingly met by Russia, Russia's influence in Eastern Europe is waxing instead of waning, and Western Europe now appears to be following the same path. Demand for natural gas in the 25 countries of the EU is expected to reach 28 Tcf annually by 2020. EU dependence on Russia for gas is projected to increase from today's 40% of gas imports to more than 60% in 2030, possibly even reaching 80%. That constitutes a near-monopoly and ties the EU so closely to Russia that any threat to the supply -- political or physical -- becomes massively disruptive. The Russians and the EU expect to move all this gas through both existing and new pipelines, but what will it cost and who will pay? Can "old Europe" pay the price? How do these developments affect Eastern Europe?
