AAA Expects Gas Prices to Have Only Slight Impact on Labor Day Travel

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 21:00 CDT

Aug. 31--AAA does not believe the gas prices will affect travel very much this weekend for the Labor Day holiday.

The group expects an increase of just under 1 percent of the number of Americans who will travel at least 50 miles for vacation.

Roughly 83 percent of all travelers will go to their destination by vehicle, said AAA. The group noted that the increase is less than the last few years, reflecting a slight impact from gas prices and a greater number of schools opening before Labor Day.

About 12 percent of holiday travelers will fly this weekend and 5 percent will go by train or bus. Travelers can expect higher costs this year for hotels, flights and car rentals. AAA encouraged people to search out the lowest gas prices and to try and conserve fuel.

The highest number of Labor Day travelers will be headed out West, followed closely by the Southeast. Towns and rural areas are the preferred destination, with beaches coming in second.
