Derail Planned Drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge

Next month, when Congress reconvenes, members will be voting on the budget reconciliation bill. We all must do our part to make sure the bill does not pass if it would allow any drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge ("What can the government do about gas prices? Not much," Aug. 21).
Drilling for the minute amount of oil recoverable from fields there would help destroy one of the few pristine areas the planet has left. There is very little usable oil, it would take years to extract, and it would not lower our gas prices or our dependence on foreign oil. We can do that only through energy conservation and alternative energy sources. We should be doing all we can to preserve our natural resources and wildlife, not exploiting these treasures for corporate greed. The Arctic today, Florida tomorrow.
