Hong Kong, Aug. 31 (Jiji Press)--China National Offshore Oil Corp., or CNOOC, will start natural gas production at a field in disputed waters in the East China Sea, company leaders have said.
The leaders Tuesday unveild a view that natural gas to be produced at the Chunxiao gas field can be transported to Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, from October.
Japan and China are at loggerheads over natural gas development in the East China Sea, because the Chunxiao gas field lies close to a Japanese-claimed border line dividing the two countries' exclusive economic zones and Japan is concerned that resources may be siphoned off from the Japanese zone.
There is no likelihood that Japan and China will launch a joint development project around the gas field in question, a company executive said.
In July, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry granted Japanese oil producer Teikoku Oil Co. rights to test-drill for natural gas in the disputed waters.END
