J. Wylie Donald, a prominent insurance coverage and environmental law partner based in McCarter & English's Newark, N.J. headquarters for 12 years, has moved to the 360-lawyer firm's Baltimore office.
"Wylie has a wonderful breadth of experience with successful litigations in jurisdictions across the nation," said Donald S. Meringer, managing partner of McCarter & English's Baltimore office. "We're very pleased that he has chosen to relocate and participate in our growth in Baltimore. His knowledge of electronic litigation techniques will magnify the resources available to each of McCarter & English's offices and will deliver better, more cost-effective services to our clients."
Mr. Donald's practice focuses on insurance recoveries for corporate policyholders. He has successfully pursued coverage for environmental cleanups, pharmaceutical products liability, and impaired beverage products, among others, and has counseled insureds on a wide variety of matters including coverage for market-timing and legal malpractice claims. Mr. Donald also litigates environmental claims for corporate clients.
Among Mr. Donald's recent accomplishments were the settlement of an environmental cleanup suit in which millions of dollars of future costs will be paid 100% by the other party and a multimillion-dollar recovery in an insurance coverage case even though his client's insurance notice was alleged to be 13 years late. He is also a pioneer in innovative settlement techniques such as the use of guaranteed remediation contracts for the resolution of complex environmental cleanup lawsuits.
Mr. Donald is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law, (J.D., 1993), where he was Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and Rice University (B.A., 1984). Before practicing law, he served as an officer on board the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Augusta (SSN 710), where he was responsible for the safe operation of the nuclear reactor, as well as serving as the mid-watch OOD. He has published widely on environmental, insurance and radiation-related topics in both scholarly and trade publications. His article on unpublished decisions has been incorporated into law school syllabi and reading lists. As a lecturer, Mr. Donald has addressed ethics issues, radiation injury claims, mold experts and hazardous substance release reporting requirements. He has also moderated panels on environmental topics.
