EU: Five of the 25 member countries have implemented new waste packaging recycling directive in national legislations so far. They were supposed to do so by mid Aug 2005. According to the European Commission, the five countries are the Czech Republic, the UK, Austria, Germany and Luxembourg
. The new norm regulates the recycling of waste made of paper, plastic, metal, wood and glass. Unlike the older version of 1994, it increases the share of waste packaging to be reused, not tipped or burnt. Whereas the older directive ordered to recycle 25% of waste, the new one counts on at least 55%. The individual countries obliged to meet the new limits by 2008 or 2015, respectively. The country that recycles the most packaging, 74%, is Germany. It is followed by Belgium with 70%, Austria with 66% and Sweden with 65%. Only about one third of packaging is recycled in Ireland, Greece and Portugal for the time being.Source: Access Czech Republic Business Bulletin
