Food Bank Donates Food, Water

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 September 2005, 18:00 CDT

BLOOMINGTON - A semitrailer loaded with 20,000 pounds of food and 33,000 bottles of drinks was expected to head out early today for Biloxi, Miss., to help Hurricane Katrina victims.

It went from the Midwest Food Bank, a nonprofit organization that supplies food to more than 200 area food pantries. The food bank, which accepts food donations from businesses, operates out of David, Paul and Bob Kieser's farm on Bloomington's southwest edge.

No local people will get less because of the shipment, they said.

"We just happen to have more food and drink than we normally have," said John Feit, food bank vice president. "The good Lord has provided."

David Kieser, food bank president, and his wife, Wilma, were planning to leave early today for Biloxi.

They don't know what will happen from there. Their destination was given to them by the American Red Cross of the Heartland.

Kieser said the devastation was so awful the food bank organizers felt they had to do something.

Evergeen FS is supplying fuel for the trip. The semi will be using between 400 and 500 gallons.

The food includes cookies, candy, dried soup mixes, canned goods and crackers. Drinks were water, a berry drink and soda.

They are also taking cleaning supplies.

Another semi could go next week if companies donate pallets of food and drink or other supplies.

"There's a huge need for almost anything you can imagine," said David Kieser.

Contacts are David Kieser at (309) 275-9900, Paul Kieser, (309)- 275-9600 or Feit, (309) 838-4700.
