Energy Company Holds Open House to Display Plans for Wind Farm

Sep. 8--LEMPSTER -- For the first time this Saturday, residents here will have a chance to see preliminary plans for a windmill project proposed along the ridgeline of Lempster Mountain.
More details on the plan itself will be one of the features at a wind energy open house hosted by Community Energy, the Pennsylvania-based company proposing the project.
In July, the town issued a building permit for 15-16 wind turbine sites on the mountain. The turbines will be 200 feet tall on land leased from five Lempster residents, according to Jeff Keeler, New England director for Community Energy.
The public open house will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the cafeteria of the Goshen-Lempster Cooperative School.
In addition to more details on the proposal, including project maps, the open house will feature models of wind turbines, visual and audio displays, such as noise simulations, and other general information about windmills.
Handouts will be provided.
Keeler said there will be several representatives from Community Energy at the open house. In addition, Public Service of New Hampshire will send a representative to explain PSNH's role in the project.
Martin Murray, spokesman for PSNH, said the relationship between the wind project and the power company will be different from other energy sources in the state.
Although PSNH is required to hook up any independent producer to the energy grid, in this case the power company will purchase the power generated by the project.
The 25-megawatt project will produce enough energy to power 20,000 to 25,000 homes, Murray said.
The goal of the open house is to educate residents further on wind energy, Keeler said.
"People just don't know enough about wind power," he said.
Postcards were sent to every postal customer in Lempster notifying residents of the open house.
"We're hoping for a good turnout," Keeler said.
Keeler added that the preliminary design on the wind turbines is complete.
This fall, he said the company will be looking at road permits and preparing for initial construction phases.
