California's Processing Tomato Production to Drop 12 Percent

Posted on: Friday, 9 September 2005, 00:00 CDT

Sep. 9--Disease and fewer acres planted will reduce California's processing tomato production by about 12 percent this year to 10 million tons, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The agency said Thursday that about 260,000 acres were in production in California, down 5 percent from a year ago.

In addition, disease caused by an unusually wet spring and hot summer has caused the crop yield to drop about 7 percent to 38.46 tons per acre.

Despite the reduction in crop, the cost of tomato products, such as sauces, pastes and salsa, isn't expected to rise because processors lock in the price before growing season begins, said USDA spokesman Megan Manago.

The Sacramento area and San Joaquin valley account for about 90 perecent of all processing tomatoes grown in the United States.
