Woman's Body Found at Recycling Plant

Posted on: Friday, 9 September 2005, 15:00 CDT

A woman's body was found in a pile of paper and cardboard at a south side recycling plant Thursday night.

The woman, whom police hadn't identified Thursday evening, was discovered by a forklift driver around 5:30 p.m. in the processing area at A-1 Recycling, 2101 W. Morgan Ave., said Lynn Morgan, a spokeswoman for Waste Management Inc., which owns the business.

Police were awaiting the outcome of a medical examiner's investigation to determine whether the woman was a victim of foul play, said Milwaukee police Capt. Eric Moore.

"It's most definitely a suspicious death by virtue of her being found in a dump, and we are not making any conclusions at this point until the medical examiner's investigation is completed," Moore said.

The plant processes recycled newspaper, office paper and cardboard and receives bulk shipments from Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, Morgan said.

The city recycling program also dumps its paper there, but Morgan said it was unlikely the body came from "household recycling."

Recyclables are collected in a variety of containers, including large trash bins and roll-off boxes, and as compacted bales, Morgan said. Most loads are brought in by large trucks.

From there the materials are deposited on the floor in a large pile and then pushed onto a conveyor belt, where they are cleaned, separated and baled, Morgan said.
