Idaho-Based Washington Group International Inks Contracts, Ramps Up in Houston

Posted on: Monday, 12 September 2005, 03:01 CDT

Washington Group International Inc. recently landed two sizable contracts and announced plans to add personnel in its growing oil and gas business.

WGI subsidiary Washington Enterprises Emirates LLC signed a contract from Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co. to perform front-end engineering and design services for a sulfur-handling facility in the United Arab Emirates, the Boise-based company said in a statement.

WGI didn't release further contract details.

Sulfur is a byproduct of natural gas and crude oil processing, used in products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, LPG and heating oil.

WGI recently opened a full-service engineering center - and oil, gas, and petrochemical headquarters - in Houston. By recruiting in the Houston area and relocating personnel, the company plans to employ about 200 at the Houston office within the next year, and boost the workforce to more than 500 within three years.

Washington Group also has major engineering centers in Denver; Bucharest, Romania; and Princeton, N.J., as well as other offices serving multiple markets.

WGI told the Denver Business Journal that it plans to relocate its oil and gas management team to Houston from the former oil-and- gas headquarters in Denver, then hire about 100 technical people in Denver in the next year.

The company, which is trying to gain share in the booming energy infrastructure market, said about half of the new hires in Denver will focus on projects in the international oil and gas markets.

The oil, gas, and petrochemical market is huge, and it's growing fast, WGI Senior Executive Vice President Stephen Johnson said in a statement.
