Ethanol Plant Moves Ahead

Posted on: Tuesday, 13 September 2005, 21:00 CDT

Sep. 10--A company has been formed in Redfield and investors are being sought in an effort to construct an ethanol plant near the Spink County seat.

Redfield Energy is hoping to raise money from investors to help fund the $65 million cost of building its plant, according to press releases. The facility will be affiliated with and operated by the Watertown-based Glacial Lakes Energy.

Glacial Lakes and Redfield Energy would not comment on the project Friday, but they did provide press releases on it.

The Redfield plant would produce 50 million gallons of ethanol annually, making it one of the largest plants in the state.

Locally, the Heartland Grain ethanol plant in Aberdeen produces 10 million gallons annually, while Groton's James Valley plant is a 45-million-gallon facility.

Redfield Energy's plant is set to be constructed on a 129-acre site adjacent to a Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line about two miles north of Redfield. The plant is expected to be up and running by December 2006.

Glacial Lakes Energy, operators of a 49-million-gallon ethanol plant in Watertown, is managing the construction of the Redfield facility.

Redfield Energy has a Web site, www.redfieldenergy.com, and has scheduled several area meetings as part of its equity drive.

The investor meeting schedule is as follows:

-- Sept. 15: 4 p.m. Watertown Event Center, Watertown.

-- Sept. 17: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Redfield School Gymnasium, Redfield.

-- Sept. 19: 4 p.m. Ramkota Hotel, Aberdeen.

-- Sept. 21: 4 p.m. Holiday Inn, Mitchell.

-- Sept. 22: 4 p.m. Crossroads Hotel and Convention Center, Huron.

The Redfield plant is expected to employee more than 30 people and provide a huge boost to the local economy. Its payroll alone is expected to be around $1.6 million, and about 200 temporary construction jobs will be created by the project.

The plant will be a dry-mill facility that will have an annual capacity to process about 18 million bushels of corn into 50 million gallons of ethanol per year, according to Redfield Energy's Web site. The plant also will produce approximately 160,000 tons of modified wet and dried distillers' grain for sale to local and West Coast markets.
