Morrisons: "No Jobs Will Go"

Sep. 13--Strike-threatened grocer Wm Morrison was yesterday forced to deny it secretly wants to close three distribution centres with the loss of 2,500 jobs.
The GMB union leaked what it says is a confidential document detailing "well advanced" plans to shut down warehouses at Warrington, Bristol and Aylesford, in Kent.
National officer Jude Brimble claims that the company has "run a coach and horses" through its legal obligations by drawing up the proposals before consulting the workforce and unions. But the retailer said no decision had been made, adding that a review of its depots was "ongoing." Workers are already being balloted on strike action and the result will be known on Thursday.
A spokesman for Morrisons (off 1 1/4p at 184 3/4p) stressed that the dispute is over how the firm interacts with the unions and not about the future of its distribution network.
The GMB is calling on its 2,000 members involved to vote for a strike. Brimble warned: "It cannot be long before the shelves in Morrisons supermarkets are empty."
