Rolls-Royce Powers Malaysia

September 16, 2005

AT the heart of all Rolls-Royce products is gas turbine technology. The

company has successfully taken this technology developed for the aerospace

sector and applied it to other business sectors, such as the energy and

marine fields. Rolls-Royce, therefore, offers a range of premium products

and services not only for the civil aerospace but also the defence, marine

and energy sectors.

As a pioneer of aero-derivative engines for nearly 50 years, engineers

at Rolls-Royce have been using aero engine technology to generate

electricity, transport oil and gas through pipelines stretching thousands

of miles, and power naval vessels around the world. Much of this

capability is in operation in Malaysia.

CIVIL AEROSPACE

Rolls-Royce has had a longstanding relationship (more than 50 years)

with the airline sector in Malaysia. During the 1960s, Rolls- Royce powered

the De Havilland Comet and Fokker F27 aircraft belonging to Malaysia

Airlines (MAS). The 1980s saw Rolls-Royce RB211 engines powering MAS’ two

Boeing 747-200 aircraft.

This relationship has since expanded with the operation of 17 Rolls-

Royce Trent 800-powered Boeing 777s. More recently, the Trent 900 has been

selected to power MAS’ Airbus A380 aircraft with an expected delivery date

of early 2007. `We were clearly delighted with MAS’ recent selection of

the Trent 900 to power the Airbus A380,’ said David Jones, Rolls- Royce’s

regional director in Malaysia.

DEFENCE

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has invested in and operates some

of the most modern aircraft in the region, including a fleet of 22 Rolls-

Royce Adour-powered Hawks and seven Aermacchi MB339 trainer aircraft,

powered by the Rolls-Royce Viper engine.

The RMAF also successfully operates a fleet of 14 Lockheed C130 aircraft

which are powered by the Rolls-Royce T56 engines. And in 1998, Malaysia

became the first country in the world to purchase Super Lynx 300

helicopters fitted with the LHTEC T800 engine, which is the product of a

joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. The Super Lynx 300

helicopters are currently in service with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).

MARINE

As the world’s largest marine systems supplier, Rolls-Royce has various

propulsion related and stabilisation equipment on the RMN frigates KD

Lekiu and KD Jebat. The company was also selected, to supply the

controllable pitch propellers in the country’s offshore patrol vessel

programme. And in December last year, Rolls-Royce announced the setting up

of a new regional office in Malaysia to meet the expanding naval marine

market needs of the region.

Above and beyond its strong presence in the naval sector, Rolls- Royce

continues to widen its presence in the commercial marine sector. It

currently supplies Kamewa water jets to the Royal Malaysian Customs, with

other commercial marine customers, including the police, customs, Malaysia

International Shipping Corporation and Star Cruises.

ENERGY

In 2004, Malaysia’s oil reserves stood at 4.84 billion barrels while

natural gas reserves rose to 89 trillion cubic feet (2,500 km=), an

increase of 7.2%. Petronas, which has been entrusted with the

responsibility of developing and adding value to these resources, is also

one of Rolls-Royce’s most important customers in Asia Pacific.

Rolls-Royce has supplied a total of 45 gas turbines for gas compression

and power generation, with 14 Rolls-Royce 501 power generation sets on

offshore rigs. This is for a variety of customers in Malaysia, including

Petronas Carigali, ExxonMobil, Nippon Oil, Shell, CTOC and Talisman.

Rolls-Royce and its partner company, OTEC Kemajuan Sdn Bhd have also

established a customer support facility at Kemaman Supply Base,

complementing their existing workforce by hiring and training local

engineers.

THE PREFERRED PARTNER

Over the years, the Rolls-Royce name has become synonymous with

integrity, reliability and innovation. In Malaysia, the company has

achieved a successful track record across its four core business sectors

and continues to remain at the technological forefront of product

offerings, ensuring that customer value is maximised.

`Malaysia is a key market for Rolls-Royce, with considerable growth

potential. We look forward to continuing this powerful partnership into

the future,’ said David Jones.
