Comprehensive Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Hydraulics Handbook for Engineers and Operators

John W. Nicklow and Paul F. Boulos

This new textbook from MWH Soft is designed to help students, engineers, plant managers, and operators understand the hydraulic fundamentals that will help ensure water and wastewater plants operate properly and provide the desired level of treatment. Written by industry experts, the book covers both theoretical scientific foundations as well as advanced treatment technological issues that are explained through real-world components and situations. The book also includes more than 100 example problems and solutions that can be applied directly to engineering practice.

"Because the hydraulic design of water and wastewater treatment plants rarely receives adequate coverage in undergraduate and graduate engineering curricula, many practicing engineers are not familiar with or proficient in the hydraulic design of these important facilities," said Paul F. Boulos, one of the book's authors. "By combining theory with hands-on hydraulic design applications, we are seeking to provide an enriching and complete educational experience."

The following list of the book's chapter titles also includes some information on the topics covered in each chapter:

* Introduction-historical perspective, US regulatory framework, types of treatment systems, fluid properties, classification of flows, and modeling.

* Pressurized Pipe Flow-governing equations for steady flow, energy losses, hydraulic gradient evaluation, pipes in series and parallel, branching pipes, and non-Newtonian flow.

* Open Channel Hydraulics-governing equations for steady flow, critical flow, flow resistance, uniform flow, gradually varied flow, rapidly varied flow, form losses, and hydraulic gradient evaluation.

* Flow Measurement and Control-pipe flow, free surface flow, and hydraulic mixing.

* Pumping Systems-types of pumps, pump hydraulics, considerations in pump selection, multiple pump systems, and pumping stations.

* Hydraulic Design Considerations-plant location and layout, treatment plant capacity, evaluation of source water or influent quality, treatment technologies, and hydraulic profiling.
